Recycling

What is recycling? Recycling is the process of removing certain reusable materials from garbage streams and diverting them to facilities that will repurpose them for reuse. Why is this important? Recycling saves space in our landfills and helps to protect natural resources. Your efforts do make a difference.

Recycling Guidelines:

info
It is important to know what you can and cannot recycle. Contamination is the biggest issue impacting successful recycling practices today.

ALL ITEMS MUST BE CLEAN. Simply put all clean mixed single stream recycling containers into your cart!

Accepted items:

Plastic recycling – plastic bottles and jars #1 to #7 (check the bottom of the container)
Metal recycling – aluminum cans, baking pans/tins, foil, tin cans, steel food containers, EMPTY aerosol cans and lids
Cardboard recycling – corrugated cardboard, shipping boxes, dry food boxes, shoe and tissue boxes, detergent boxes, soda/beer cartons and paper towel/toilet paper rolls. All boxes must be flattened.
Paper recycling – includes all paper, ie. newspapers, magazines, notebooks (remove metal spine), envelopes (with windows), etc. Shredded paper must be bagged up together in clear plastic bags.
Glass recycling – Glass is NOT accepted in our curbside recycling service. Please call dispatch 250-266-6166 to arrange for a separate glass pick up. All bottles and jars must be cleaned with lids removed.
Other recycling – Styrofoam and soft plastics are accepted ONLY if they are bagged up together in clear plastic bags.
Items NOT accepted – window glass, mirrors, electronics, motor oil + other chemical containers, yard + food waste, ceramics, scrap metal

Cardboard

Cardboard recycling is one of the easiest ways to start recycling and reduce your environmental impact. Cardboard is made of a strong fiber, which allows it to be recycled over and over. Recycling cardboard saves trees, water, electricity and helps reduce your carbon emissions. Cardboard recycling is a large part of Ozzard’s waste diversion program. Roughly 90% of commercial recycling on the coast is made up of cardboard. That is a lot of cardboard! Many of our commercial customers find that a consistent cardboard recycling service is useful in many ways, it is convenient, affordable and saves time.
info
It is important to know what you can and cannot recycle. Contamination is the biggest issue impacting successful recycling practices today.

It is essential that the cardboard boxes are broken down before recycling bin. In-tact boxes cannot be bailed. All boxes must be flattened.

All boxes must be smaller than 3ft x 3ft.

Dirty (ie. food waste or grease stained) cardboard cannot be recycled. Please do not put items like pizza boxes in your bin.

Garbage

Our garbage guidelines are simple: Lock your bins!

Please ensure your garbage bins are locked and secure to ensure that wildlife is not able to access the garbage. Please call the office if you should need a lock, we provide them free of charge.
info
No metal, no cardboard, no recyclable material.

Guidelines For Building A Waste Management Enclosure

A bin enclosure, if built properly, can be great! It serves as a safety measure to protect your bins from wildlife, outside elements and can help with the appearance of your property. We recommend that the enclosure be close to where the garbage is generated. There must be direct and open access for the front load vehicle.

Building guidelines:

info
When building, please consider: overall safety (overhead wires, drains, underground tanks, etc), traffic flow at various times of the day and parking areas.

Concrete pad - 6 inch reinforced concrete (minimum of 3000 PSI), extending 4 feet in front of gate.
Concrete pad and approach must be on the same plane
Wall - Metal fencing is recommended. Wooden slats also appropriate.
Gates – 3 to 4 hinges recommended. Metal gate stabilizers are needed to hold the gates open or closed. Recessed holes are needed in the pavement.

What are soft plastics?
Plastic bags! Smooth or crinkly. Our commercial curbside truck can pick up soft plastics so long as they are bagged up together in a clear plastic bag.

Why can’t I put glass in my mixed single stream recycling cart?
It is very important that no glass is mixed in with your single stream recycling because when the driver tips the container into the truck the glass can easily break, leaving broken glass mixed in with the rest of the recycling containers which are sorted by hand at the depot. Making it very dangerous for our team.

Why can’t I put metal in my front load garbage bin?
When the front load truck tips the garbage contents into his truck it falls about 8 feet. Metal contents can damage the bottom of our truck when falling from that height. Metal contents can also damage the machines working at the landfill.

Can my cardboard be wet?
We prefer for it to be dry. But we live on a very wet coast and understand that there is no way of keep cardboard completely dry. It is ok if it is moist, not soaking.
